Had a great perl and guitar session with Alec on Friday. He helped me work on my new song [tab] and walked me through some composition techniques and concepts. Triads and inversions, moving chord roots while holding the top structure constant, moving the top with the bass note constant, harmonic rhythm. It’s amazing to see my guitar and the music I play and listen to opening up and revealing itself in new ways.

Before our session, we had lunch at Spice in the open air of a beautiful March Saturday and talked about religion besides the usual topic (women). I had a new dish from the new round lunch menu: “Mama’s Elbows.” It was ok. The massaman curry, drunk man noodles, and tofu-rama are in no danger of being displaced as my favorites.

I saw Judy’s play, “Fast Blood” on Thursday night. Melissa, Carrie, Jess, Liz and Anthony came, too, and we ate in Koreatown beforehand. It was good hanging out with everyone and I was really psyched to bring a large group to the show. Judy mentioned later that she was especially glad to have young people see it.

The play was fantastic. It had been years (a decade?) since I’d read it, and it’s been through many edits and rewrites since then. It deals with the stories of a few slaves in the American South. It’s impactful as far as historical theater goes, but even more powerful in the basic human emotions and archetypes it explores. It is great theater, and reminds me why I love the form so much. I really hope that it gets produced again and again and is seen by oodles and oodles of people.

Judy and I went for tea after the show, and caught up a bit. We talked a lot about the college scouting trip that she and Dani took recently, and it was fun to hear Judy contrast Hampshire and Amherst and Wellsley.

Speaking of sisters, I found round-trip tickets to Peru for $466 round-trip. Hope I can get Mom to commit before the fare disappears. Then again, the fare is on Lineas Aereas Costarricenses, and I don’t guess they change their fares to frequently…

It’s cool to know The Last Great Renegade Poet personally. Between him and The Mighty Geek, I beginning to think I need a grand title for myself. Unfortunately, Blind Tangerine and Pop Culture Slut, are already spoken for, which really cuts down the options…
