At a restaurant the other day, Jeanhee and Chiara and I were waiting for our food. The waitress had given Chiara some crayons and paper, and I was writing out our names in big block letters: CHIARA, LUKE and JEANHEE. As I went, I asked Chiara what each letter was. She knows ‘A’ pretty solidly, and even knows that it is associated with the word ‘Apple’. To my surprise, she also identified ‘R’.

The highlight, though, was when I pointed to a ‘U’ and asked what letter it was. She smiled and exclaimed, “Umbrella!”
