I skated down the Hudson River bikepath tonight, after midnight. It was a beautiful, cool evening and it was quiet. On an island of three million people, i saw perhaps 40 (not counting cars’ occupants) covering a span of eighty blocks or so. I saw the Statue of Liberty shining tall and green to the south. I saw the clean empty harbor at the World Financial Center. I didn’t see any sense to the universe, but I saw beauty at least.
