A note I just sent to Andrew Hoffman (ahoffman@publishers.org), who is listed as the contact for a reward for information leading to the arrest of intellectual privacy “criminals” (presumably similar to Dmitry Sklyarov):
Hi Andrew,
You don’t know me, but I wanted to let you know that I think that the AAP’s support of the Sklyarov prosecution and of the DMCA is really terrible. Prosecute the pirates, not the tool-makers. By the logic of the DMCA, we should criminalize the manufacturing and sale of guns, knives, computers, and books, since they can all be used to help people cause negative effects on society and other individuals.
By supporting this law, and offering a reward to information leading to arrests under it, the AAP is making our society a worse place to live in. Please feel free to share this note with your colleagues. I’ll be sharing it with mine.
Respectfully yours,
